At the board of directors meeting on March 24, 2010, a proposal was approved to conduct a few public relations activities to make the SLV-BOCES more visible in our communities. Part of the rationale is to increase awareness among those we serve as well as the pool of potential employees. Another part of the reason is to prepare materials to use in a future capital fund drive for a new building for the BOCES.
Several ten-minute interviews were conducted with Ms. Burrell moderating. Those interviews include ones with Nita McAuliffe, Elden Daniel, Mary Valerio, David Carson, Eva Barela, Kathy Morteson, and Stephen Bohrer. They have played on radio station KRZA (88.7 FM) and are now available on the BOCES' website.
Several present and former employees of the SLV-BOCES met in May 2010 to jointly remember and discuss important events and program developments since the the 1966 founding of the SLV-BOCES. As Winston Churchill is credited for saying, "Without an understanding of how the past impacts the present, we won't have a future," we desire to fully understand the significant events of the past 44 years. To conduct the exercise Judy Burrell; Cindy Squires; Nita McAuliffe; Stephen Bohrer; Neil Henderson, executive director ahead of Mr. Tillman; and Berline Wooten, SLV-BOCES' office manager from 1970 to 2003. Past executive director John Tillman was unable to attend, but helped finalize the document.
All of these activities contributed to a brochure effictively describes programs and philosophy of the SLV-BOCES. It will be used in staff recruiting and information mailings. Judy Burrell's husband Peter Weiss designed the brochure using some of his outstanding photography.
